Abstract

The industrialised world's population is ageing. Declining infant and child mortality rates have contributed to the growing proportion of people over 60. By the end of the century, it is expected that there will be twice as many people alive over that age as there were in 1970. Hence societies may have to prepare themselves to devoting an increased part of their working resources to support a growing number of non‐earners.
