Abstract

The Local Government Training Board is aiming to provide a useful back‐up service to local authorities to support their involvement in the Government's Youth Traineeship Scheme, due to start next September. The task group responsible for developing the scheme, following the publication of New Training Initiative, have placed emphasis on local initiative and administration. Local authorities will be involved at three levels: as an integral part of the 50–60 local boards which will be set up, as managing agencies administering the scheme, and as sponsors to take responsibility for the complete programme for one or more trainees. The LGTB will be supporting them by, for instance, providing advice and further information, and developing model trainee schemes and teaching material for participating authorities. It will also contribute to the establishment and monitoring of standards for the scheme; monitoring its effects on craft apprenticeship training, and on the training of other appropriate occupational groups; helping with the training of staff in the careers service.
