Abstract

The Clothing & Footwear Institute has undergone sweeping changes in its structure and activities. Its objective has been to produce an effective and financially viable organisation with a small number of enthusiastic staff, under its new director. Its policy has been to decentralise activities, with CFI staff visiting areas, branches and companies more frequently. Courses, seminars, conferences and Council/ Committee meetings will now be held at selected venues throughout the country. In effecting the changes, great emphasis has been placed on maintaining and enhancing the Institute's standing as the professional body for two major industries. The examination procedure and curricula are consequently being updated, with the intention of simplifying them and making them more appealing to students entering all management areas of the industry — manufacturing, marketing, finance and administration. As an important step towards attracting new members an award of Membership (MCFI) is being introduced, which will be certificated so that its value will be recognised and members will aspire to attaining the higher grades of ACFI and FCFI (representing Associate and Fellow) as their individual careers develop. Recruitment of new and suitably qualified members will be high on the list of the Institute's priorities. The CFI's new premises are at 71 Brushfield Street, London El 6AA.
