Viewpoint: Terms are purely academic
Abstract
Voltaire once stated that not all the armies in the world are as powerful as an idea whose moment has arrived. In education, this is the case with distance learning. The concept is not new. In the 1840s, shortly after the introduction by Roland Hill of the penny post in the UK, correspondence education began; and millions have used it effectively ever since as their means of self‐advancement.
