Abstract

A cyclical upturn in the economy began in the autumn of last year. Government policies preclude any significant rise in consumer spending this year, but there should be a modest recovery in the volume of retail sales in all sectors in 1977. This is the view of Lady Hall, of NEDO, who recently prepared the paper which follows for the EDC for the Distributive Trades. Lady Hall also notes that prices are likely to continue rising faster than earnings for some time to come. In the course of 1977, the rate of inflation may very possibly fall below its current level of 13%.
