PROTECTING CONCRETE: AGAINST CORROSION

Abstract

Numerous materials used in the building industry come under the category of alkaline structures, such as concrete, cement, plasters and, to some extent, brickwork. All these materials are very often regarded as being of an extremely permanent nature and only under special conditions are they considered to suffer corrosion. Where attack is likely to be severe they are naturally rejected as constructional materials, but in many other cases attack is sufficiently slow to be apparently ignored. Ultimately this slow attack results in a state of off airs which can only be rectified by the costly practice of reconstruction.
