Abstract

Traditionally, it has been the practice to protect iron and steel surf aces from corrosion by the application of paint and to renew the paint film as required from time to time. Since cast‐iron water pipes were introduced 200 years ago it has become necessary to devise alternative methods of protection for buried pipes, as periodic renewal of the protective coating is not possible and a paint film will not in any case withstand normal soil conditions for any period.
