Abstract

The information industry operates today in a rapidly changing environment. In the space of only a few years, technological developments have led to fundamental and probably permanent changes in the ways many information services are produced and used. And the technology keeps marching on, with advanced developments such as broadcast satellites, electronic publishing, and video publishing now gaining prominence. Yesterday's research curiosities have become today's commercial realities. Information consumers may choose from an increasing diverse menu of intelligent hardware devices, sophisticated software packages, and factual and full‐text databases.
