Abstract

Planes, construction of; propelling.—Aircraft engines with air‐cooled cylinders in line are arranged with their lines of cylinders perpendicular to the line of flight and enclosed within the supporting planes, which have openings for the passage of cooling air. The cylinders may be vertical, horizontal, or, where there are inclined rows, as shown in Fig. 3, the crankshafts being transverse to the machine and geared to forward or rear propeller‐shafts or to both. There may be a series of engines geared to pairs of forward and rear propellers arranged along the edges of the plane. Passengers may be accommodated to the front or rear of the engines, in the latter case the space being kept warm by the air circulating round it.
