Abstract

If an electric current i flows in a metal in the direction of the temperature‐gradient dT―dx' or in the inverse direction, then besides Joule's heat an evolution or an absorption of heat takes place in the metal. This phenomena is called Thomson effect, and the heat‐quantity thus evolved or absorbed Thomson‐heat. Thom‐son‐heat W generated during time t in unit volume of the metal is given by the following expression:
