Abstract

To produce equal firing intervals in a four‐stroke engine comprising x rows of y radially‐arranged cylinders, the crank shaft has y throws which are not symmetrically arranged, but are angularly spaced or a multiple thereof, excepting or a multiple thereof, y being an odd number, and x and y being both greater than 2. Formulæ are given for ascertaining for different firing orders, the arrangement of crank‐shaft throws, and of balance weights at opposite ends of the crank‐shaft and the masses thereof, calculations being effected for a 27 cylinder engine arranged in nine rows of 3 each; in this case the front and rear throws are spaced equally from the third throw.
