Abstract

THE effect of axial constraint on box beams of approximately rectangular section, subject to torsion, is of interest to the aircraft designer in connexion with the stressing of two‐spar skin‐covered wings. The stresses due to torsion in a uniform box with one end built‐in have been investigated by D. Williams, both by rigid methods and using the ordinary “engineer's” theory of bending. Three simple types of loading are considered:—
