Abstract

FATIGUE has recently become news. Owing largely to certain scare articles in the daily Press the public has been made fatigue‐conscious. This has resulted in a quite unjustifiable doubt in the lay mind of the condition of affairs as to the design and safety of modern aircraft. We say unjustifiable because the suggestion is two‐fold; that in the first place it is a subject on which complete ignorance prevails and secondly that until public attention was called to its dangers scientists were blind to its importance. Both suppositions are, of course, quite untrue as a very considerable effort has been devoted over a considerable number of years to a study of the matter; with the result that there is in fact a quite remarkable understanding of it.
