Abstract

A new type of freight lift which will reduce aircraft turn‐round times is to be used by Britannia 253's in service with Transport Command. It will enable the military Britannias to operate effectively from small airfields where local cargo handling facilities are limited. The lift has been designed and built by Short Brothers & Harland to facilitate rapid loading and unloading of all kinds of military freight, ranging from guns and wheeled vehicles to crates and light packages. It will be used in conjunction with a ball and roller conveyor system also developed by Shorts. Sufficient lifts for all Transport Command's Britannias have been ordered by the Ministry of Supply.
