Abstract

IT was a black day for the Decca Navigator Company, and for British aviation as a whole, when on April 8, 1960, the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization decided, by fourteen votes to seven, to recommend the American short‐range navigation system VOR/DME as an international standard. That the decision was based on political expediency rather than technical merit is much to be regretted, for with the growing appreciation of the value of a pictorial display system, and the recent developments announced by the Decca Navigator Company, the gulf between VOR/DME and Decca appears to have widened even further.
