Abstract

A Brief Outline of the Background to the Requirement for the HS.748, its Basic Design Features, Development, Performance and Operating Economics. THE diversity of routes flown by the airlines of the world poses an almost impossible problem to the designer of a modern airliner who is trying to meet the greatest number of requirements with a single aircraft type. In the short/medium haul transport field the ubiquitous Dakota has proved itself capable of operating sectors of up to 1,000 nautical miles while still carrying an appreciable payload of passengers and freight. Although a critical examination of the short‐haul routes of the world shows that nearly all scheduled routes are less than about 400 nautical miles in length, it is an unfortunate truth that the operator with a fleet of aircraft of one type must be able to fly much longer stages when the occasion demands.
