Abstract

IN modern aeronautics each generation of aircraft is aimed at higher goals of performance and capability. To achieve these technical advances more refined techniques have to be applied in every aspect of design. A great part of these new techniques will be derived from basic research. Such research, to be effective, has to be initiated a considerable time before its results will be needed for practical application. This necessitates having a clear appreciation of the probable trend in future aircraft development if the basic research is to be meaningful. It is most important also that such enterprises should be co‐ordinated in time scale and also in respect of their influence upon each other.
