Abstract

Like the 1919 reprint, the year 1938 has special interest due to historical circumstances. With the advantage of hindsight and the knowledge of how false were the political claims towards mobilising, the difference between the British private enterprise and the nationalised air industry of Germany makes really interesting re‐reading. Then there is the interest in the aircraft, the half forgotten extremes of the ‘thirties, such as the Chilton single scaler and the brave new ideas like the Mayo Composite, with a strip of photographs to show that aeroplane piggyback riding really could take off in mid‐air. And in the German section, there are the names which we now associate with stern memories, the Dornier Do 17 bomber, the Focke‐Wulfe Weihe monoplane, the Heinkel He 118 dive‐bomber.
