Abstract

MAINTENANCE, as you well know, is not restricted to transport aircraft. Your car, your television set, your washing machine and all the other machines which have become part of your life will need maintenance sooner or later. You maintain these machines to keep them safe and working just as we maintain our aircraft to assure their safety and reliability. And yet there is a difference in the importance of what you and we do. If your electric razor fails, you can always grow a beard. If your engine quits, you can park your car and call for help. These failures are annoying, but they are hardly matters of life and death. Aircraft safety is! And so can be aircraft reliability. If an airline can't keep the percentage of its on‐time departures in the upper nineties, it will pretty soon find itself fighting for survival.
