Abstract

Nearly 8.5 million passengers, more than 300,000 tonnes of air cargo, 46,000 tonnes of mail, and roughly 110,000 take‐offs and landings (not including military air traffic) have been registered or handled in the first half of 1981 on the Frankfurt Rhein‐Main Airport, West Germany's most important airport. This mass of passengers, which equals day after day the population of a medium‐sized town can only be coped with using the most advanced ground operation control techniques, all the more so since the latest structural changes in international air traffic indicate a definite trend to concentrate on a few central “air traffic cross points”, where, inevitably, traffic volume has risen heavily.
