Abstract

FUTURE potential and current requirements have to be considered together in any airlines assessment of fleet composition with the balance between the two sometimes very finely drawn. Pan Am's acquisition of Airbus Industrie aircraft and orders for a large number provides an example of this philosophy in which the carrier will have the eventual advantage of standardising on three types (A310, A320 and the Boeing 747) consistent with its projected capacity and range needs. Also, it will have the certainty of incorporation of yet‐to‐be‐developed technology in the A320 which is still some 2½ years from first flight.
