Abstract

ACCEPTANCE levels or performance criteria derived from impact data which may be used in the evaluation of occupant survivability in civil aircraft are contained in an advisory circular issued by the FAA. It is noted that the scientific study of human exposure to impact began during the Second World War when ejection seats were developed for high speed aircraft. After the war, the work was expanded primarily for the US military forces. The concern for automobile safety which developed during the 1950s and 1960s resulted in an expansion of studies and guidelines for the applications of these findings to Army helicopters can be found.
