Abstract

For several years now, the greatest challenge in the U.S. auto industry has been the internationalization of the marketplace. Competition is no longer limited to regional or national markets; it is worldwide with very sophisticated competitors. And it's been very difficult for U.S. automakers, with their higher cost structure, to be fully competitive with foreign producers, particularly the Japanese.
