Abstract

Project Jupiter is a UGC funded project sponsored by the JANET User Group for Libraries and managed by Glasgow University Library. It has its background in the UGC's major commitment to and investment in library networking, undertaken in 1987. At that time, the JUGL Committee submitted a bid to the UGC to provide training and education for university libraries; this received a favourable response and outline funding was earmarked. Subsequently, at the Committee meeting of JUGL on May 20th 1988, it was announced that the UGC had confirmed its support for this project. It then asked the JUGL committee to invite tenders from universities to act as host institution for the development of a training programme for library staff. Jupiter is intended to provide a programme of training, seminars, and publications in order to develop an understanding of the potential of networked applications and services. It is expected to work closely with the JUGL committee, and keep in active contact with all other relevant groups. The project is funded at £60,000 over a 2‐year period.
