Abstract

The computer industry is introducing new technology so rapidly that each year it produces about 25% more for the customer, at a constant cost. The discoveries and applications of science, which have sustained this growth, are discussed. Potential limits to this progress are also mentioned. The science and technology of disc storage, programming and the end‐user interface, and designing for ease of use are considered.
