Abstract
AS this leader is being written Union chiefs are pondering what they can do to stop the death of a large part of British Leyland. As they have been totally unable to prevent constant unofficial stoppages at the same factories operated by that giant company the short answer, alas, is nothing. On top of a previous 18,000 redundancies previously announced a further 25,000 men are to lose their jobs, no fewer than 13 of the factories are definitely to be closed down and the future of a further 36 is on a precarious balance. The time for Union action, it would seem, has long passed.
