Abstract
The world is rapidly becoming one, but the people in it are becoming increasingly, and vociferously, individual. Between idiosyncratic individuals and One World there must be mediators, if all is not to slip into chaos. There are many would‐be mediators, but in the world of work there are none to compare with managers. Managers, in growing numbers and varieties, must somehow hold the balance.
