Abstract

The optimal design of a small dc torque motor, acting as a position actuator, is considered. The magnetic field is simulated by means of a 2‐D finite element model, taking into account the magnetization curve of iron and permanent magnets. The optimum shape of the motor, exhibiting the minimum cost, subject to a set of behavioural constraints, is found by a stochastic optimizer of lowest order.
