Abstract

In the year 1852, a patent issued by George Hutchison, of Glasgow, claimed to impart to oils a degree of fluidity equal or superior to that of Sperm Oil. This may have been the first patent relating to additives for the improvement of lubricating oils, and there seems little doubt that the property which early inventors were striving to enhance was oiliness.
