Abstract

“A gradual change‐over to gas turbine power plant will take place in some sections of the industrial field during the next fifteen years”. This is the opinion of Mr. G. B. R. Fielden, M.A., M.I.Mech.E., Chief Engineer, Turbine Department, Ruston & Hornsby Ltd., and expressed at the conclusion of his Paper given recently to the Diesel Engine Users' Association. Mr. Fielden's paper was entitled “Operating Experience with a 750 kW Gas Turbine” this type being free from cooling water requirements. He went on to say that this type of power plant will fulfil a need for peak load power plants, for light portable power plants which require no water for their operation, and for traction applications in which the inherent torque conversion characteristic of a free‐running power turbine is an important asset. When methods of blade cooling have been fully developed, the gas turbine may replace some diesel engines and steam turbines.
