Effect of Lubricant on Cam and Tappet Surfaces

Abstract

TheRE are seven different cam and tappet metal combinations existing in the U.S.A. in the eight overhead V‐8 engines manufactured there today, and it is difficult to provide one lubricant to satisfy the requirements of all of these in addition to normal engine lubrication duties. Some work on this has been done by T. W. Havely, C. A. Phalen and D. G. Bunnell of the Shell Oil Co. at their Wood River Research Laboratory, and a paper was read at a March meeting of the Society of Automobile Engineers in Detroit.
