Abstract

Since the war there has been an increasing interest in the advantages of standardisation and simplification, both as safeguards for the consumer and as a means of raising productivity and reducing costs … Although standards are generally described as of two types, “functional” and “dimensional,” they are probably better grouped into four, according to whether the specification is by performance, chemical and physical properties, or dimensions, or is for purposes of “communication” and recognition.
