Abstract

IN A PAPER PRESENTED TO THE SOCIETY of Automobile Engineers at their National West Coast Meeting at Seattle in August, J. A. Miller and C. K. Parker, Jr. of the California Research Corporation, gave details of a new motor oil containing a polymeric detergent together with a suitable level of a zinc dithiophosphate. Polymeric detergents are described as viscosity index improvers with detergent properties and they do not contain metals common to conventional additives and so their contribution to combustion chamber deposits is minimised. Multi‐grade oils containing them are stated to be satisfactory in both diesel and petrol engines in all types of service. The authors give results of many tests made with 10W/30 motor oils containing this additive and referred to as Test Oil “A” whose physical properties are given as follows :—
