SOME NOTES ON THE APPLICATION OF ELASTO‐HYDRODYNAMIC THEORY TO GEAR LUBRICATION
Abstract
NEGLECTING the effects of elastic deformation, the idealised geometrical mode of engagement between gear teeth provides for area contact in only a few special or non‐standard gears, and in most gears such engagement is nominally at lines or points, usually lines. Nominal point contact occurs in some cases, e.g., crossed‐helical (skew shaft) gears, but is exceptional. On the other hand, gears with nominal line contact include practically all spur, helical and bevel gears, most worm gears, and various others, including hypoid gears.
