Abstract

THE OIL used for geared marine steam turbines lubricates both turbines and gears and at one time trouble was experienced with gear scuffing. The various aspects of the problem were investigated by the Research Department of the British Ship Research Association (formerly part of Pametrada) and the work was helped by the use of a unique perpendicular‐axis disc machine for studies of material compatibility and lubricating oils ; the solution of the problem was found to be the inclusion of E.P. type additives in turbine oils, particularly when the mechanisms were being run‐in.
