A Novel Way of Measuring Wear in Lubricant Evaluation
Abstract
BALL RACES are sometimes used to evaluate the performance of lubricants, and abrasibility studies by the ASTM Test Method D 1367–64 use the loss of weight of a metric double‐row bearing as a criterion. An interesting if unorthodox, approach is suggested by the use of some thousands of steel balls rolling over another, in a chamber that is oscillated under controlled conditions. The resulting wear values provide a statistically acceptable criterion for certain of the commoner lubricants.
