Abstract

UNION CARBIDE'S Coatings Service has developed a new plasma‐torch‐applied coating which utilizes cobalt‐based alloys to provide a high‐temperature, corrosion‐resistant overlay for the aerofoil surfaces of the Rolls‐Royce Pegasus engine's high‐pressure turbine blades. These engines are used in Harrier Jump Jets, the aircraft which won considerable acclaim in Falklands fighting and whose performance and reliability was impressively displayed to many thousands at the recent Farnborough Air Show.
