EXXCARE: A Computerised Expert System Approach to the Care of Marine Lubricants in Service

Abstract

This article highlights significant aspects of the care of marine lubricants in service, which are required to fully utilise the high quality of lubricating oils. It also describes in some detail a unique feature of EXXCARE, that is its computerised expert system to assist the ship's engineers with efficient maintenance of Exxon lubricants in service, whether in diesel engines or in other machinery. Caring for marine lubricants is thus shown as consisting of good purifying and handling practices on board ship in support of the advice given to the operator through EXXCARE, arguably the most advanced diagnostic arrangement current available for marine lubricants in service.
