Abstract

FMC Corporation was one of first conglomerates and an early adopter of shareholder value theory. This chronicle of the evolution of its planning system as a decision‐making process for developing competitive strategies offers valuable lessons on how to insure that everyone understands the issues, the alternatives, and the implementation action required for success.
