Put the Buffer to Use
Abstract
Currently the M300 Workstation has a 20‐character buffer, in which you can “type ahead” and stack commands, or any keystrokes that will fit in the alloted 20 spaces. (A 20‐character buffer is also present in the IBM PC but the two are in separate programs and cannot be combined for a 40‐character total.) OCLC Retrospective Conversion staff utilize this buffer to speed input by reducing the time the computer spends waiting for human interaction. Local retrospective conversion projects could put the same techniques to use to reduce input time by increments—with the potential for saving substantial time over the life of the project.
