Abstract

Libraries can receive credit worth one First Time Use (FTU) charge by upgrading one minimal‐level record to level I (full‐level cataloging). When the record is used to produce cards or tapes, an FTU charge is applied to the library's account. The FTU charge balances with the upgrade credit, thus there is no charge from OCLC for the transaction. Effective Jan. 1986, credits appear on OCLC bills. See OCLC Technical Bulletin No. 159 “Upgrade of Minimal‐level Records” (Sept. 1985) for procedures to upgrade bibliographic records with Encoding Levels K, O, or 7. Procedures for locking and editing master records are in Cataloging: User Manual, 2d ed., sect. 9.1. Users of the Cataloging Subsystem should upgrade an O‐level record rather than input a new record for the same item. This procedure replaces instructions stated in Appendix D, section D.4, of the same manual.
