Abstract

In June 1985, at the tradition‐steeped University of Paris, in one of the oldest European Institutes of higher learning — the Sorbonne — was set the scene of a conference on tourism training organised by the World Tourism Organisation. The event attracted experts in the fiels from 72 countries from all over the world. Ranged among these specialists are some who have devoted the most thinking and effort to questions currently pussling travel and hospitality. From the very beginning, the nature and character of the discussions showed that there were two main trends of thought represented by the several hundred participants: ‘bottom line’ and ‘fundamental questions’.
