HOUGHTON POULTRY RESEARCH STATION
Abstract
Diseases affecting animals grown for human nutrition may have a direct and serious influence on the purchasing power and standard of nourishment of a household. Diseases of poultry are estimated to cost this country not less than £50,000,000 per annum — a figure which takes into account not only mortality, but also indirect losses arising from adverse effects on production and reproduction, food conversion and body weight, and the cost of disease control and prevention. Since the consumption of poultry meat and eggs is now higher in this country than it has ever been, it is obviously good national economy to try to reduce the cost of the poultry product whilst retaining a reasonable return for the producer.
