Abstract

Speaking about the dangers of a high salt intake at a recent press conference, Professor Arnold Bender explained that 100 grams of salt is a fatal amount, yet the average intake in the UK is about 10 grams a day, or even 30 grams for the real salt ‘addict’. In 1977 the US Senate Committee on Nutrition recommended a daily intake of 5 grams of salt but this was rejected because most people find this low level intolerable. We all need salt, and the actual daily requirement although not certain is about 3 to 4 grams.
