Abstract

The term “dietary supplement” is used to cover a wide range of products. It includes products that provide recognized nutrients, for example, vitamin and mineral tablets and fish oils, as well as products marketed for their “health giving properties” such as royal jelly and ginseng. Dietary supplements are used by almost one in three adults in the UK. In 1990 a total of £52 million was spent on multivitamin supplements, according to Which? Way to Health, but the British Health Food Trade Association claims that £220 million are spent on dietary supplements as a whole.
