Abstract

The Dietary and Nutritional Survey of British Adults suggests that too many calories in the national average diet are being derived from fat and too few from carbohydrate. There is a misconception among the general public that carbohydrates are fattening and many people consciously cut down on the amount of rice, bread, pasta, other cereal foods and potatoes which they consume. This has now been identified as a myth and the COMA Report, Dietary Reference Values, recommends that carbohydrates should contribute at least 50 per cent of our daily food calories.
