In this most readable book, Heathcoat‐Amery sets out the attempts at European Monetary Union so far, and presents the case both for and against. His argument is tilted against European Monetary Union, not just for the UK but other countries, arguing that any economy controlled by a European Central Bank would result in high unemployment. Heathcoat‐Amery also stresses the huge costs of operating such a system, costs which have remained concealed from voters although recognised in the findings of the MacDougall Report and by Jacques Delors.

A Business View of EMU presents the results of a questionnaire which was distributed, along with A Single European Currency: Why the United Kingdom Must Say “No”, to 5,000 Directors of the largest British companies. There are nine conclusions pointing to strong opposition to a single European currency: the preference is clearly for a European free trade zone in which businesses can operate. Respondents’ comments make this a lively and enjoyable pamphlet.
