The David Davies Memorial Institute of International Studies

The David Davies Memorial Institute of International Studies

The David Davies Memorial Institute was formed in 1951 to commemorate and continue the work of David Davies (1880-1944), who in 1932 became Lord Davies of Llandinam. He began his tireless campaign for peace in 1919 when he founded the world's first Chair of International Politics, The Woodrow Wilson Chair, at the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth, thus starting a new discipline now read in universities the world over. He propagated his ideas in a number of books and the creation of the New Commonwealth Society, branches of which were established in most European countries as well as in the USA and China. With the outbreak of war, Lord Davies turned his attention to the future of Europe. In his book A Federal Europe he stressed the need for a union not simply of governments but also of peoples, with the USA serving as a model for Europe.

The aim of the David Davies Memorial Institute is to promote a wider understanding of international issues through a programme of studies and publications addressing both practical international problems and international relations theory. The Institute lays particular emphasis on issues of international cooperation and integration and conflict resolution and brings together study groups from a variety of backgrounds. It publishes reports, books and occasional essays as well as its periodical journal, International Relations, and presents an annual lecture by a recognized authority on a matter of current international concern.

The President of the Institute is The Rt Hon. Lord Healey of Riddlesden, CH, MBE. Peter Unwin is the current Director.
