Britain's University for Industry (UfI) pilot scheme is set to expand after winning a grant under the EU Adapt programme.

Sunderland University has been awarded around £4 million towards the £9 million project to expand the UfI pilot scheme throughout the north east in 1999 and 2000. Partners include the BBC and Sunderland City Training and Enterprise Council.

The scheme aims to improve access to learning, and take courses to where people live and work. There are currently 35 learning centres, based in the workplace, libraries, community centres, schools, colleges and shopping centres. The European grant means that, within a year, there will be more than 100 learning centres between the Scottish borders and Teeside.
