Thousands of part-time lecturers will benefit from a public-private sector partnership to improve teaching and learning in further education.
Education Learning Services is launching a quality initiative designed in partnership with more than 100 colleges across Britain to provide continuing professional development for part-time lecturers.
Traditionally, part-time lecturers have been regarded as a casual workforce, hired and fired as needs change. They often bring up-to-date skills and experience into colleges, but may lack formal teaching qualifications or experience. The Education Lecturing Services initiative will provide part-time lecturers with lifelong-learning opportunities to improve their teaching skills.
The Internet-based lifelong-learning network is at the heart of the plan, which also includes initial training for new part-time lecturers, a quality audit of lecturing assignments and quality management information for colleges.
Comments Education Learning Services managing director Frank Lord: "Access to learning can make a huge difference to the quality of teaching assignments which part-time lecturers deliver, and raise retention and achievement. Part-time lecturers and their students will be the winners."
